It's only in early beta (which you can buy into), but this looks like a lot of fun.

Frozen Synapse

Here is the planned feature-list for the full version:

  • Multiplayer: Hostage Rescue, Disputed, Secure (bidding-based mode), Extermination
  • Single player: Campaign, Skirmish, Puzzle
  • Community features: Friend List, rate and comment on games, Personal Feed, Daily and Global Rankings, Instant Matchmaking
  • One-click match export to YouTube
  • Slick, modern UI to make planning simple and intuitive
  • Evocative music and audio by electronic musician nervous_testpilot
  • Facebook and Twitter integration

I loved a similar game called Laser Squad Nemesis.  I am really tempted to get in on the beta with this one!

Looks interesting!

I love turn-based tactical games.  It's like Chess.  LSN was a good one, too.

The only possible negative with this game is that each match seems to last only six or seven turns (30 seconds total), which is a bit short for me.  The battles in LSN lasted about 15-20 turns, which was just the right amount of time.

But I'm still excited by this.  Seems to have all the right features, too!

I hope it will come to Impulse....

The maps are are too small?...or perhaps the number of units/squad is not enough?

From watching some of the replays on Youtube, it seems that the maps are too small when you have such powerful weapons as rocket launchers.  LSN had sizable maps with lots of buildings, some of which offered protection even from explosives, but FS seems to play out in a relatively confined space with fully destructible structures.  This seems to make every engagement short and brutal.

Well, as I see we can create maps, so maybe this won't be such a huge problem later on. I am considering buying this game.

There is a relatively, healthy discussion about the game here.  I have decided to wait until more of the single player aspects are implemented.  With games of this type that have online play, I always fall in the category of "People who get pounded by those who have more time to perfect strategies".

That is always a concern.  For me, as a rabid chess player, I've developed a pretty thick skin as that is the stock and trade of chess.  LSN had a similar problem, but that game played so well that even when you lost it was fun because the battles were so wild.  I suspect this will be the same.  And with a match only lasting six or so turns, it is quick and easy to move on to the next opponent.

I do like that your troops and the map layout are random from game to game (from what I understand). That should help throw a monkey wrench into the master plans of those hardcore players that really like to dig into the guts of a game for that extra advantage.

Just bought the game, since I find the concept and execution brilliant! Been playing just one evening, but I am already hooked.

So, is anyone here up for a game?
